Funky Face (Level 3)

Goals and Objectives

  1. To use semi-randomness in the act of art making
  2. To create a portrait from direct observation in graphite

Step by Step

  1. Students get out their sketchbook, a pen and a mirror and draw a teacher led 3 minute blind contour drawing of a peer in their sketchbook
  2. Students draw a 3.5 minute blind contour drawing of a peer in their sketchbook
  3. Students draw a 4 minute blind contour of themselves in their sketchbook
  4. Students get out an 18"x24" piece of newsprint and draw a 5 minute blind contour drawing of a peer on newsprint
  5. Students draw a 6 minute blind contour drawing of themselves on 18"x24" newsprint
  6. Students get out an 18"x24" piece of drawing paper and trace a 16"x20" template in the middle of the paper (which should be oriented vertically)
  7. Students create a teacher led 6 minute blind contour drawing in PENCIL of themselves on their final drawing paper
  8. Demo simplifying some shapes and erasing/correcting lines that need it while RETAINING the odd proportions
  9. Add any necessary shapes for highlights and reflections - especially in hair
  10. Begin shading: must incorporate fill-in and hatch shading - the goal is to have the drawing look as realistic as possible so reference the mirror for light and dark areas and stretch/smush them as needed
